This Secret Will Lead You To Your Life’s Calling
“What should I do with my life?” That is the question of your life’s calling. Sometimes it feels like we will never figure out what it is but I learned a valuable lesson about finding it. If you need to get on the road to your destiny I’ve got a powerful insight for you. Read on and please let me know your thoughts in the comments.
After having experienced such a profound calling in my life, two things are so clear in hindsight: 1), childhood dreams clearly pointed the way and 2), so did some of the things that annoyed me the most.
Neither really grabbed my attention at the time. But, looking back, they were always there. Personal dreams are a topic for another time. I think we all get that one and how it relates to our calling. But the things that annoy me? Yep, and here’s an example.
The Bane of My Existence
As an employee of a custom builder, I have to communicate with some very successful clients. Since we do business in the Pacific Northwest these are frequently aerospace or tech executives or people who are otherwise in some type of high-end management positions.
These people are often superb communicators and I really appreciate that. Since I believe that I have strong communication skills it’s a pleasure to engage with these people. We can usually easy come to mutual agreements and find strong rapport together.
But, many of the construction subcontractors that I have to work with are, shall I say, not so skilled. With not all, but many, the written and verbal communication skills are middle school level—or lower.
What aggravates me the most is not the lack of proper mechanics or style of their communication but that they just cannot come out and say what they need to say at all. It gets lost in rabbit trails and broken thoughts. After repeating my questions or persistently prompting an answer I will usually pry out the gist of what I need. But, it’s draining. It leaves me pale like a vampire just sucked the last drop of life out of me.
Every time I experienced an interaction like this I became more cognizant of my own desire to come out and say something relevant and meaningful. I wanted people to appreciate what I had to say and my ability to say it. I wanted an outlet that could also help others.
My Opportunity
On that fateful day when I received my calling it hit me square in the face—I realized I could write in ways that were really meaningful to me and others.
For so many years I was blind to what is so visible to me now. The obvious was concealed even though it was right in front of me the whole time.
That writing should be at the core of my calling makes sense looking back. Communicating ideas is so important to me.
With written communication, I took great pride in providing clear, concise, complete emails and documents to others. I wrote my heart out, almost in defiance of some of the emails and documents I would receive from these subcontractors.
My own gifts had been screaming out inside me and I couldn’t hear them.
I began to write online. I felt “in my element” by writing and the more I wrote the more in love with writing I became.
And I tell you what—I feel more inspired and fulfilled than I ever have in my life. If only I could have seen it earlier.
Your Own Breadcrumbs
You too have your own breadcrumbs leading you to your calling. Maybe like me you keep stepping on them but have never noticed them.
So what are some things that annoy you to no end?
It could be how your best friend’s finances are always completely messed up. Could you offer budgeting advice to others so they can be better stewards of their money?
Maybe it’s the fact that your sister’s house is always a filthy mess. Could you become a decluttering expert so people can become more focused and effective in life?
Perhaps you and your spouse have the greatest marriage and you can’t get how all your neighbors and coworkers are divorcing. Could you provide marriage advice?
What about how it aggravates you that so many people turn a blind eye to international poverty or political atrocities? Could you find a way to make a difference and provide resources and encouragement for others to do the same?
How could you be involved to make the world a better place?
The things that annoy you do so because there is something inside you that says, “I can fix this.” You are annoyed because something isn’t getting done right and you know exactly what you would do in the same situation if only that were your job.
It might be that things annoy you because you were meant to do those things, not others who have no clue.
Take Away
If you haven’t come to a gripping realization of your calling in life try reflecting on the things that annoy you in your relationships or experiences. Walk through a typical day in your mind and find all the points that trigger a sense of aggravation in you.
For most of us, that shouldn’t be hard—we complain about them all the time!
If you still can’t see it, bounce the question off of someone you trust. They will probably be eager to help you see what you moan about all the time to them.
You will surely begin to see some patterns. If they align with certain strengths of yours you might be on the track of something big. They could be leading you to your calling.
You might begin to see some light bulbs go off about how you could offer your gifts to make these situations better. Actually, your mind may just become flooded with creative ideas.
Test them out. Experiment with opportunities and solutions. If you are still stoked a month later—or even more energized about the ideas—keep going. If not, reassess.
Keep at it until you figure it out. I believe you have a calling and that the clues are out there. Those clues could be the things that annoy you most. If so, they will lead you straight to your calling.
Hello, my name is Aaron Force. I’m a blogger based in Seattle, Washington. I’ve been spiritually-minded for most of my life. Unfortunately, I’ve also lost my way during much of that time. I felt a seed of greatness hidden somewhere deep down inside but was blinded from it. That is until I experienced an honest-to-goodness calling and moment of awakening. I would be lying if I told you I had it all figured out. But I’m here to tell my story and maybe, just maybe, help you become aware of an even more amazing universe than the one your rational mind already knows.
