Why Doubt Is The Biggest Dream Killer Ever

Why Doubt Is The Biggest Dream Killer Ever

Doubt can be so pernicious and paralyzing. Other than fear it has probably killed more dreams of mine than anything else I know.

The trouble with it is that it isn’t always bad. It can serve to protect us from investing in that shady business cousin Vin has been trying to coax us into, for instance. So we can’t always dismiss it.

But what I’m talking about here is doubt when we know we should be doing something. We know we should be striving to live our most powerful life but something inside us tells us it’s just not for us. For some unknown reason, we might believe that success is meant for others and not us.

But if we are ever going to strengthen ourselves against this enduring enemy we have to learn all we can about it.

In that light, here are three reasons that doubt is the biggest dream killer ever:

1- It Stops Us Right Out Of The Gates

Doubting can trip us up before we ever start. It immediately hamstrings us by calling in to question whether we are even capable of success.

Doubt is really just credibility confusion. It’s like when a deer gets caught in the headlights. There’s a paralysis that happens while it tries to figure things out. And we all know how that ends.

If we doubt someone else’s ability to come through on something, that’s one thing. We can typically be far more objective in evaluating other people. We can even analyze some facts and possibly be swayed otherwise.

But when it comes to judging ourselves, we are far too subjective. For whatever reason, we tend to err on the side against us rather than for us. And once we do doubt our own credibility we don’t have the capacity to gain a new perspective on ourselves very well.

And with that, we find ourselves stuck.

2- Doubt Is A Spiritual Disconnect

When we express doubt it’s like someone flicks off a switch to the power we need to move forward successfully. Unfortunately, that someone is us.

Doubt puts up walls or blocks that prevent our intention from freely interacting with the universe around us. I like to think of the “universe” as an unseen realm that we can interact with, much like the physical one that’s all around you now. It’s a place of cause-and-effect—a causal dimension, in other words.

I don’t mean to imply any voodoo about this.

It’s simple really. Our thoughts or intentions are sent out and they come back to us in manifested form. We create the life around us by what we think about. If we always think positive things, over time we draw positive circumstances to ourselves. Our optimism can change our life for the better. With this open, faith-filled mindset we can find success or, maybe better put, success can find us.

But sometimes, mental blocks go up and interrupt that great cosmic flow of power. We erect walls that get in the way. Doubt is one of those blockages.

It stops the flow of creation in our lives. It shuts off the power.

Spiritually speaking, mental limits are one of the strongest you can have. When the walls of doubt go up our faith—and our potential— hits a dead-end.

3- It Rejects God’s Power

God is the provider and protector along the journey of our life. It goes without saying that we should want Him to stay pleased with us so He can bless it.

Hebrews 11:6 (ESV) tells us that:

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

So these words reveal to us that faith is critical to finding favor with God. That sounds like something I should want and I do.

But doubt is really the opposite of faith. Doubt says that nothing can help me, not even God Himself.

Ouch. That’s a cliff I need to back away from very carefully.

When we do have faith, however, there are no limits to what can be done.

One of my favorite Bible passages is Mark 11:23. It says (Study Bible):

“Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes that it will happen, it will be done for him.”

Faith can literally move mountains in our lives—but only if we remove our doubt.

Take Away

No matter what you do you are going to go through periods of doubt. It’s just human nature.

But if you are trying to move forward with a life of purpose and intention, you’ve got to be able to identify doubt and tackle it. It can’t have any place in your vocabulary.

The first step to victory over it is to understand it better and get a firm grasp on its consequences. When we understand the negative effects of something we are all the more empowered to resist it.

Fight through your doubts and you are well on your way to living your most powerful life.

“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” -Franklin D. Roosevelt
